The Prediction of Diversity Statistics on Terrestrial Microwave Links

چکیده

Short Title: Prediction of Link Diversity Statistics. Abstract The average annual rain attenuation statistics experienced by individual microwave links are well understood. ITU-R models exist for the prediction of these statistics and they are used to assign power levels to links to achieve the desired availability. The performance of networks such as mulit-hop links or links utilising route, frequency or time diversity, is considerably more complex and only superficial guidance is available for their design. The complexity arises from the correlation of rain attenuation experienced by the various individual links in the network. To understand and predict the performance of these networks it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal correlation of rain intensity. This paper introduces a model for the high-resolution spatial and temporal variation of rain intensity proposed by Paulson [2001]. This model allows the direct calculation of all the first and second order, temporal, statistics of rain attenuation experienced by pairs of microwave links, when the link system is covered by single rain events. The model is used to develop expressions for the joint rain attenuation distribution for pairs of links and hence expressions for diversity improvement. These predictions are compared to diversity statistics measured from a database of radar images covering the Southern UK.

Rain attenuation measurements over terrestrial microwave links operating at 15 GHz in Malaysia

This paper presents the experimental results of rain rate and rain attenuation measurements on six terrestrial microwave links in tropical Malaysia. The rain attenuation data were collected from six DIGI MINI-LINKs (DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia, Shah Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia) operating at 15 GHz with 99.95 % availability. The experimental results were compared with th...

Comparison of measured rain attenuation in the 10.982-GHz band with predictions and sensitivity analysis

The campaign to collect rain attenuation data on terrestrial links had commenced in Malaysian tropical climates for almost two decades. The terrestrial data so far collected have been greatly utilized to derive useful statistics for various microwave applications, such as frequency scaling, rain rate conversion factor, 1-min rain rate contour maps, wet antenna losses, and fade slope duration an...

Rain attenuation predictions on terrestrial radio links: differential equations approach

The results of rain attenuation on terrestrial microwave links in a tropical climate has been reported in this paper. The results are presented in the form of rate of change of attenuation with respect to rain rate, denoted by S.R%p/. This is in turn used for predicting the expected rain attenuation at any %p of the time rain rate is exceeded in any tropical location. The predictions of the pro...

An improved ITU-R rain attenuation prediction model over terrestrial microwave links in tropical region

An improved approach of predicting rain attenuation cumulative distribution (CD) over terrestrial microwave links operating in tropical regions is presented in this article. The proposed method offers a better extrapolation approach for determining the values of rain attenuation at different exceedance probability from the measured attenuation at 0.01% of the time. The experimental data consist...

Fade Depth Prediction on Wireless Microwave Links Using Two-ray Multipath Model

Fade depth prediction for airborne communication links is considered in this paper. There is no fading model for this specific scenario at the moment. The two closest models are the Olsen-Segal model for terrestrial links and the ITU-R model for satellite links. However, they cannot be directly applied to the airborne scenario. We propose a two-ray multipath fading model adapted to a realistic ...
